Behind the Seams: A Q&A with Our Fairy Tong Dressmakers
At Fairy Tong, every twirl-worthy dress is brought to life by hands full of talent, patience, and passion. We sat down with three of our incredibly skilled team members — Mr. Zhou (Pattern Maker), Mr. Yang and Mr. Jiang (Dress Makers) — to learn more about their stories, sewing secrets, and the beauty behind the seams.

Q: How long have you been working in fashion?
Mr. Zhou: I’ve been in bridalwear for 19 years. I started sewing when I was just 16 and taught myself how to draft patterns. It’s been my life ever since.
Mr. Yang: 31 years! I even opened a restaurant for a while, but I’ve always found my way back to fashion and wedding dress making.
Mr. Jiang: Over 20 years in womenswear, like suits and day dresses, and more than 10 years working on bridal gowns.
Q: How did you first get into sewing?
Mr. Zhou: I started with sewing machines at 16 and became curious about pattern making, so I just started learning on my own.
Mr. Yang: I was in the army at first. After that, I looked for a job and got into fashion through friends and family.
Mr. Jiang: For me, it was a natural path — I stuck with it because I enjoyed solving problems with my hands.

Q: What’s your favourite part of your job?
Mr. Zhou: That magical moment when the first draft turns into a real dress. It feels like watching a sketch come alive.
Mr. Yang: Improvement. Every dress is a new chance to refine and grow.
Mr. Jiang: Creating something complex and beautiful from scratch — especially pleated or gathered designs.
Q: What do you find the most challenging?
Mr. Zhou: Working with sequin fabrics! They’re not great for gathering and are very hard to control, especially when the fabric is too soft.
Mr. Yang: Plus-size garments take more time. They’re not difficult, just longer to make properly.
Mr. Jiang: Yes, large sizes and custom pieces always take longer, sometimes even double the time. We also need to check measurements repeatedly throughout sewing.

Q: Do you have a favourite design you’ve made for Fairy Tong?
Mr. Zhou: The Rose Princess Midi Dress— it was my very first for Fairy Tong, so I’ll never forget it.
Mr. Yang: Our designs are all quite difficult, but I’d say the Pink Magic Midi Dress is the fastest as we made many different colours of it. The most complex one? The purple jacquard dress with all the pleated details from the Isabela Midi Dress.
Mr. Jiang: The Aurora Butterfly Dress — it was intricate but very rewarding.
Q: What sewing tools or techniques do you love most?
Mr. Yang: I love using a single-sided presser foot — it’s perfect for precision. That’s my go-to trick!
Mr. Jiang: The magic is in pleating and shrink-gathering techniques. It’s hard to master, but when done well, the result is stunning.

Q: What’s a typical step-by-step process for making a Fairy Tong dress?
Mr. Yang: We start with pattern-making, then paper patterns, cutting, sewing, attaching embellishments, quality checks, and finally packing and shipping. For sewing, we usually go in this order: Centre back → skirt sides → then front and side panels.

Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of sewing?
Mr. Zhou: Watching fashion videos on Douyin (Chinese TikTok) — I love seeing what others are creating.
Mr. Yang: Cycling, running, and basketball. I need to keep moving after sitting all day!
Mr. Jiang: I play table tennis. It keeps me sharp!

Q: What impact has this job had on your life and family?
Mr. Zhou: I’ve been doing this for most of my life. Once I started learning, I stuck with it and built my whole career around it.
Mr. Yang: Everyone in my family works in this industry. It’s a safe and stable work.
Mr. Jiang: I’ve put everything aside to focus fully on this job and give my best to the factory.
Q: How do you feel when customers compliment your work?
Mr. Zhou: Very happy! When I hear a customer say, “Thank you for making my dream dress,” it makes all the hard work worth it.

Q: Any suggestions for the brand?
Mr. Zhou: Just keep the orders coming — we love it!
Mr. Yang: Maybe fewer super complicated styles — they take a lot of time.
Mr. Jiang: Please give us slightly more time on urgent orders — we just want to make sure every stitch is perfect.
